Ransomware and natural disaster
Ransomware is another threat that is a growing epidemic. When your entire database and all operational applications are taken hostage, which happened with the San Francisco Public Transit System, your business will come to a hault. Without a backup and disaster recovery plan you will not have many options:
- pay a huge ransom without any guarantee
- re-building a database from scratch which will take days if not weeks.
Even though ransomware, as well as natural disasters, happen infrequently they are very destructive, and always unexpected. Even an accidental flood in a building may destroy servers, leaving little chance for data recovery. These are the moments to blame on Murphy’s Law unless you have a foresight for a business continuity plan.

Google Drive is not going to be enough
One can use common cloud services, like Google Drive, or even a portable hard drive to backup the data. That may be useful on a small scale, however, imagine that you’re running an office with an e-mail server, IP phone system, accounting software and a CRM. You have to backup all systems manually which introduces the potential for human error. In a case of a data loss event; how quickly do you need to deploy your system?

- Recovery Point Objective (RPO) refers to the amount of data at risk. It’s determined by the amount of time between data protection events and reflects the amount of data that potentially could be lost during a disaster recovery. The metric is an indication of the amount of data at risk of being lost.
- Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is the targeted duration of time and a service level within which a business process must be restored after a disaster (or disruption) in order to avoid unacceptable consequences associated with a break in business continuity.

Set it and forget it
What does it take to have this solution? You need to define your company’s RPO and RTO and have the Fortitude certified engineers set it up on your server and test it. You’ll be good to go! But either you have a business continuity plan or not, always remember the 3 golden rules of data protection:
- Have 3 copies of your data on 2 different types of storage, at least 1 copy in the cloud
- Make it easy to use. Backup desktops, laptops, servers. Replicate or backup VM’s. Keep a copy local. Stream data to the cloud. Convert your backup to a VM in the cloud.
- Test it. Test it & test again. Make sure you schedule it
